The Hidden Costs of "Superwoman": Why Women Burn Out & How to Avoid It

A subject I have written about before and yet “Superwoman” seems to be everywhere. Don’t get me wrong at times she is useful. However I prefer to connect to my warrioress energy for short periods of time when I need to roll up my sleeves and get a job done. Staying long term in this role is not only exhausting, it is bad for our health.

So why are women still falling into this role. We juggle demanding careers, household responsibilities, and often the primary caregiving roles, leaving little time or energy for ourselves. This relentless "doing" can lead to burnout, resentment, and a sense of losing ourselves in the process.

Why This Happens

  • Societal Conditioning: Traditional gender roles often place the burden of caregiving and household management disproportionately on women. This ingrained expectation can make it difficult to prioritise self-care, as it might feel selfish or indulgent.

  • The "Superwoman" Myth: Societal pressure to be everything to everyone – successful career woman, devoted mother, perfect homemaker – creates an unrealistic and exhausting standard.

  • Fear of Judgment: Women may fear being perceived as selfish or neglectful if they prioritise their own needs.

The Consequences of Neglecting Self-Care

  • Burnout: Constant stress and exhaustion can lead to physical and emotional burnout, impacting productivity, relationships, and overall well-being.

  • Resentment: Feeling overwhelmed and undervalued can breed resentment towards partners, children, and even oneself.

  • Loss of Identity: Prioritising the needs of others can lead to a loss of personal identity and a sense of emptiness.

Encouraging Self-Care:

  • Reframing Self-Care: Shift the perception of self-care from selfish indulgence to essential self-preservation. Listen to the messages you tell yourself. When we are in a good space it benefits not just ourselves but also those around us.

  • Prioritising "Me Time": Schedule dedicated time for activities that bring joy and relaxation, whether it's a long bath, a nature walk, or a hobby.

  • Setting Boundaries: Learn to say "no" to requests that drain energy and prioritise activities that nourish the soul.

  • Mindful Self-Compassion: Practice self-compassion by acknowledging your limitations and treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend.

  • Community Support: Connect with other women who understand the challenges and offer support and encouragement.

Here are some easy and impactful self-care activities:

  • Mindful Breathing: Even 5 minutes of deep, intentional breaths can significantly reduce stress.

  • Quick Workout: A 10-minute burst of exercise like skipping, push-ups, or dancing can boost your mood and energy.

  • Nature Walk: Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood.

  • Gratitude Journaling: Writing down a few things you're grateful for each day shifts your focus to the positive.

  • Mindful Eating: Paying attention to the taste, texture, and smells of your food can make mealtimes more enjoyable.

  • Digital Detox: Even a short break from screens can help you feel more present and less overwhelmed.

  • Warm Bath: Adding Epsom salts or essential oils can enhance relaxation.

  • Listen to Music: Music can uplift your mood, reduce stress, and improve cognitive function.

Tips for Making it Stick:

  • Schedule it in: Treat self-care like any other important appointment.

  • Start small: Begin with just a few minutes each day and gradually increase the time.

  • Find what you enjoy: Experiment with different activities to find what truly relaxes and rejuvenates you.

  • Be consistent: Even small, consistent efforts can make a big difference over time.

  • Don't give up: It's okay if you miss a day or two. Simply get back on track and continue prioritising your well-being.

Remember, self-care is not selfish. It's essential for your physical and mental health, and it allows you to show up as the best version of yourself for others.
